BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A state lawmaker from Alexandria is proposing a 4-cent boost in Louisiana’s gas tax.
Democratic Rep. Herbert Dixon faces a tough road, however. Gov. Bobby Jindal has said he will veto any tax increase approved by legislators in the regular session that begins April 27.
Louisiana motorists currently pay a 20-cent per gallon tax on gasoline.
A 4-cent slice of the tax goes to a special list of road and bridge projects. The remaining tax money goes to other transportation projects, and Dixon wants to raise that portion by 4 cents a gallon beginning July 1, 2010.
