BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A state lawmaker wants to put term limits on every statewide, parish and local elected official in Louisiana.
Rep. Simone Champagne, a Democrat from Jeanerette, is proposing that all elected officials serve no more than three consecutive terms in office.
Lawmakers will consider the idea in the legislative session that begins April 27. The bill would need a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate and approval by voters because it would change the Louisiana Constitution.
Under the proposal, if an elected official is already limited to fewer than three consecutive terms — like the governor, the more strict term limit would remain in place.
