Students began scheduling their summer, fall and intersession classes on Sunday evening, and all seems to be going smoothly so far, according to University Registrar Robert Doolos.A list of scheduling dates was included in a broadcast e-mail sent to students Friday. Students schedule courses based on the amount of hours they have earned. Doolos said he hasn’t heard about students having problems with course availability yet, but said the wait-list feature — in its second year of use — has been a success. For the spring 2009 semester, 11,933 courses were added to students’ schedules from wait-lists, Doolos said. Before 2007, students had to contact professors about trying to get into a class or simply had to wait until the next semester to take a course. “It’s a much fairer way for students to get into a course,” Doolos said. The feature allows students to join a wait-list for classes that already have a full number of students. A number is displayed by the wait-list so students can track where they are on the list. Students are notified when a course becomes available or the course is added automatically. “It’s getting students the courses they need when they need them — it doesn’t get better than that,” Doolos said. Clay Benton, assistant registrar, said to get on a wait-list, a student first has to attempt to add the course. He said students often see there are no seats left for a course and look for the wait-list which isn’t there. Online prerequisite checking is another relatively new feature that allows students to view prerequisites for more than 800 courses. When students know what courses they are eligible to take, scheduling is a lot simpler, Doolos said. Scheduling dates run through April 24.–Contact Kyle Bove at [email protected]
