BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Initial claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana decreased to about 3,500 for the week ending Feb. 28.
That’s according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. The previous week, the state recorded about 4,100 initial applications for jobless benefits.
State officials say the decrease stems from fewer claims coming from those who have lost their jobs in wood products manufacturing.
For the comparable week ending March 1, 2008, there were just under 2,500 new claims filed.
But for the latest week, the state recorded a slight rise in continued unemployment insurance weeks from the previous week. Those claims have increased by more than 17,000 over the comparable week of 2008.
