The LSU men’s golf team will be without one of its best golfers this weekend. The No. 23 Tigers are travelling to Awendaw, S.C. for the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate tournament at Bulls Bay Golf Club this weekend, their second to last tournament before traveling to the Southeastern Conference Championship at Frederica Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga. LSU men’s coach Chuck Winstead said freshman Sang Yi has a previous obligation and will not participate in the tournament. “It’s probably a good thing,” said Winstead. “It allows us to play three others. Hopefully we’ll nail down the lineup for the SEC tournament.”Yi shouldered the Tigers’ load last weekend, leading LSU to a 12th place finish in the Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.Yi carded his third top-10 finish of the season at the Invitational, placing fourth. Yi shot a sizzling 2-under par 214 for the tournament, with a low round of 69. “Sang had a nice event,” said Winstead. “Other guys struggled.”Normally a consistent performer, sophomore John Peterson headed into the weekend on a roll after snatching first at the John Hayt Intercollegiate tournament.Surprisingly, Peterson sputtered to a 42nd place tie. A glance at Peterson’s scores in the tournament reveals a kink, however. A nightmarish 9-over par 81 in the first round doomed Peterson’s hopes for a second consecutive win. He rebounded in his next two rounds with a 1-under par 69 and a one-over par 73.”John had an off first day,” Winstead said. “Other than that, he played really solid. Sometimes that happens.”Peterson and fellow sophomore Andrew Loupe will headline the Tiger effort this weekend, with sophomore Clayton Rotz, senior Jarrod Barsamian and junior Brent Blaum filling out the rest of lineup. “We’re looking forward to it,” Winstead said. “We’re going to flip the lineup a little bit and see how they play.” LADY TIGERS LOOKING TO CONTINUE SUCCESSThe No. 9 LSU women’s golf team now heads to Athens, Ga., for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic after a third-place finish in the LSU Golf Classic on March 13-15″We’re just going to go out there and play,” said LSU women’s coach Karen Bahnsen. “The weather is supposed to be bad, so whoever handles conditions better will win.”The Lady Tigers fired a three-round total of 3-over par 867, or three over par, in the fifth edition of the Classic held at the nearby University Club. Bahnsen and company were missing a key piece of the puzzle in sophomore Megan McChrystal, who sat out with an illness. “I could not be more proud of my team for what they did playing without the No. 9 player in the country,” said Bahnsen in a news release. “We’ve got some other great players on this team, and they played very hard. I’m very proud of them.”The absence was no matter for the Lady Tigers. Freshman Jacqueline Hedwall filled the hole left by McChrystal in a big way, shooting a dazzling 4-under par 212 for the tournament. The score, five strokes below her previous season-low, netted Hedwall a tie for seventh place. “I feel like she’s one of those who’s going to develop more every time she plays,” Bahnsen said. ——Contact Chris Branch at [email protected]
