While two LSU athletes improved their provisional qualifying marks at the LSU Invitational on Friday, no athletes recorded automatic-qualifying times for the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend. Senior Rabun Fox recorded a personal-best weight throw of 65 feet, 7 1/2 inches in his last indoor competition as a Tiger. Junior Katelyn Rodrigue improved her provisional qualifying mark of 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches with a jump of 13 feet, 5 inches.
Former Olympian and LSU sprinter Richard Thompson won the 60-meter dash Friday with a time of 6.61 seconds. It was Thompson’s first meet of the year after his involvement in a car crash on New Year’s Day in his native Trinidad and Tobago.
Thompson said only suffered a few minor injuries but had to push back his training because of the incident.
“I’m so pleased with my time [Friday] because I had some major setbacks coming into the competition,” Thompson said.
The Cyclone National Qualifier in the Lied Athletic Center in Ames, Iowa, marks the last opportunity for remaining Tigers and Lady Tigers to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13 and 14.
