Most of this year’s LSU track and field fans would not recognize the names of the participants in LSU’s first outdoor competition of the year.None of the big-name athletes who competed in individual events at the NCAA Indoor Championships from March 13-14 were sent to the first outdoor track meet on Saturday at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette.Yet LSU still managed to qualify five athletes for the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships from May 29-30.LSU, Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls State, Lamar, McNeese State and Southeastern Louisiana among others all had athletes represented at the meet. There was no Trindon Holliday, no Walter Henning or Samantha Henry in Lafayette this weekend. There was, however, a Gabriel Mvumvure.Sophomore Gabriel Mvumvure, an NCAA 200-meter dash semifinalist last year, set regional qualifying times in the 200-meter dash (wind-legal 21.15 seconds) and the 100-meter dash (wind-aided 10.43 seconds), the latter of which he won.Olympians Isa Phillips and Richard Thompson, both former Tigers, finished first and second, respectively. Six of the top 10 finishers in the 200-meter dash were current LSU athletes. Mvumvure was the top Tiger in the event, finishing third. The weight throwers now move from the weight throw in indoor competition to the hammer throw in the outdoor meets.Junior hammer thrower Chris Bless finished second at the meet, setting a regional qualifying mark of 189 feet, 4 inches. He finished a spot ahead of third-place teammate Rabun Fox.For the Lady Tigers, freshman Cassandra Tate won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.96 seconds. Tate also finished third in the 100-meter dash at 11.83 seconds, .01 seconds behind teammate Liann Kellman (11.82 seconds).Junior Katelyn Rodrigue won the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and senior Anna Lyons won the women’s javelin with a regional qualifying mark of 156 feet, 4 inches.——Contact Rowan Kavner at [email protected]
