The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., had never been rained out before. But Sunday’s 18-hole round was the only day of competition for the 18 teams after nasty weather soaked the field and cancelled the first two days of the tournament. The golfers didn’t even make the trip to the course on the second day after the first day was rained out.The No. 9 LSU women’s golf team has been making a habit out of finishing low one week and high the next. In their previous six tournaments, LSU finished sixth, first, seventh, second, sixth and third, respectively. The pattern didn’t change, as the Lady TIgers finished tied for sixth with No. 8 Georgia with a 17-over 305 in their one and only day of play this weekend. They edged out eighth-place No. 3 Virginia (18-over 306), which won the LSU Golf Classic a week ago.LSU made a run toward the end, coming within four spots of the lead, but couldn’t manage to close it out.”We started off very slow, hustled and got back into it,” said LSU women’s coach Karen Bahnsen. “We made a couple bogeys at the end. We didn’t want to do that, but it happened.”No. 7 Auburn won the tournament, shooting 11-over 299. In a competition with six teams nationally ranked in the top 10, only two (Auburn and No. 6 Alabama) finished in the top five.”It was pretty tough conditions,” Bahnsen said. “You could see all the scores were high.”The weather was far from pretty after the two days of rain.”It was cold, cold, cold [Sunday] and really windy,” Bahnsen said.No. 28 Kent State, No. 13 North Carolina and No. 24 Ohio State also finished ahead of LSU.Only two golfers finished under par on the day. Alabama’s Kathleen Ekey led the leaderboard with a 3-under 69, and Kent State’s Kirby Dreher finished second with a 2-under 70.No individual LSU golfer finished in the top 10, but freshman Tessa Teachman tied for 13th on the player leaderboard with a 3-over 75.Sophomore Megan McChrystal and senior Caroline Martens both tied for 19th on the leaderboard, shooting a 4-over 76.——Contact Rowan Kavner at [email protected]
