The Southeastern Conference has extended its contract with commissioner Mike Slive through July 31, 2012, the league office announced Wednesday.Slive has been SEC commissioner since July 1, 2002. He served as Conference USA’s commissioner from 1995-2002 and as the Great Midwest Conference’s first commissioner.The Utica, N.Y., native’s original contract was extended in 2005 to the 2008-2009 academic year.Slive has served as the coordinator of the Bowl Championship Series for Division I football and is currently the chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.”I am gratified that the Presidents and Chancellors have extended my contract and I am honored to serve as the Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference,” Slive said in a news release. “We have accomplished many of our goals since my arrival in 2002 and there will be new challenges and goals to meet in the future. I look forward to these challenges as we continue to make the SEC one of the nation’s top intercollegiate athletic conferences.”
