WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden said Monday his 92-year-old mother is recovering after surgery for a broken hip — and is still in charge.
“She’s 92-years-old, and God love her, she came through,” Biden said to applause. “She broke her hip. And she came through the operation incredibly well.”
Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Biden was admitted Sunday to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia after a fall at her home in Greenville, Del., a suburb of Wilmington. Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said doctors inserted a plate and a screw in Mrs. Biden’s hip and said doctors are pleased with the surgery.
Biden visited Philadelphia on Monday morning before speaking to the International Association of Fire Fighters’ legislative conference. He joked that many of his family members were also there.
“Everybody’s up because my mom runs the show and — you think I’m joking? I’m not,” he said.
Biden praised his mother, who was on stage with her son at President Barack Obama’s election night rally in Chicago.
“Those of you who have met my mom, you know she’s fairly politically astute, and she still runs the show,” Biden said.—-Contact The Daily Reveille news staff at [email protected]
