In honor of St. Patrick’s day this past Wednesday, the LSU men’s tennis team will have to hope the third time is not a charm for Texas A&M.The Tigers (6-5, 1-3) enter this weekend’s matchup looking for its third win in as many years against the Aggies (6-5).LSU travels to College Station, Texas, to face No. 15 Texas A&M tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center.LSU last visited College Station in 2007 when they squeaked out a 4-3 victory, while defeating the Aggies, 5-2, last season in Baton Rouge.”We have had teams that have gone in there and won under some tough circumstances,” said LSU coach Jeff Brown. “The crowd is very big and very loud and organized.”The team looks to carry momentum stemming from an important 4-3 non-conference victory against South Florida on Wednesday, Brown said the win took some pressure off a team that earlier in the week was on the bubble for the NCAA tournament in May.”Certainly you can’t just completely collapse at the end of the year,” he said. “But that would be a big enough win that would maintain it.”Brown also said a win against the Aggies this weekend would propel the Tigers back into the Top 25 for the first time since late February and cement their spot with the NCAA selection committee.”This [match] is one where we can kind of hunt ahead and it’s not going to make or break us but it can certainly do a lot more good to us than it will do us harm if we don’t get it,” he said.Senior Michael Venus, the No. 9 singles player in the NCAA, is searching for another Top 20 victory to add to his résumé.Venus, a Orlando, Fla., native, will take on a familiar foe in No. 16 Conor Pollock.”I know Conor a lot from juniors”, Venus said. “I’ve played him a bunch before.”Pollock, along with teammate Austin Krajicek, boast the No. 3 doubles team in country and will compete against Venus and freshman Neal Skupski, the No. 12-ranked duo.”Those are good matchups from a fan’s viewpoint,” Brown said. “Mike’s a good competitor, and he handles adversity very well on the road, so I think he’ll do fine.”Brown said Venus is a remarkable competitor who has established himself as the team’s leader.”He adds fire when he’s in the right frame of mind,” Brown said. “You can see the whole team just fight around him.”Brown also said it is nice to know somebody like Venus can go out and have the possibility to win every match he competes in.”A lot of teams aren’t in that position,” he said. “It’s nice knowing when he’s feeling right as he has been, he’s going to give us an opportunity to win at the top, which allows people to play in more comfortable positions.”_____Contact Sean Isabella @[email protected]
