The LSU track and field athletes who have already automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships can rest this weekend, but others have one last opportunity to qualify at one of two different locations. The LSU Invitational is Friday at the Carl Maddox Field House, and the Cyclone National Qualifier is Saturday at Iowa State’s Lied Athletic Center in Ames, Iowa.”This weekend is a last chance qualifying kind of a situation where we have some people that are right there on the bubble from the standpoint of getting into the NCAA meet,” said LSU coach Dennis Shaver. Those with automatic qualifying marks are automatically into the NCAA Indoor Championships, whereas those with provisional marks have a chance but will not necessarily be invited. Only a certain number of slots are available for entrants.”We have some that will compete this weekend just to keep them sharp,” Shaver said.LSU freshman Michael Lauro and senior Rabun Fox look to increase their provisional weight-throwing distances.Lauro and Fox finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships last weekend with throws of 64 feet, 3 1/4 inches and 64 feet, 3/4 inch, respectively.”They’re kind of sitting right there where if they just improve about a foot, they’re going to get in,” Shaver said. “Anything can happen once you get there, because only about 14 or 15 [weight throwers] make it to the meet.”LSU senior Andrea Linton, junior Katelyn Rodrigue and sophomores Tenaya Jones and Kenyanna Wilson are among the Lady Tigers who will compete this Friday.”The triple jump here is going to be an important event for [Linton] to improve her performance and solidify that she’s going to get into the {NCAA Championship] meet,” Shaver said. Other Tigers and Lady Tigers will be sent to the National Qualifier in Ames, Iowa.”We hope that we get our [women’s 4×400-meter relay team] qualified,” said Shaver. “But they can’t do it here so they’re going to Iowa State.”The LSU women’s 4×400-meter relay team includes freshman Cassandra Tate, sophomore Brittany Hall, senior Kayann Thompson and junior LaTavia Thomas.Joining them at Iowa State will be the men’s 4×400-meter relay team of junior Armanti Hayes, sophomore Jamar Howard, freshman Ade Alleyne-Forte and freshman Robert Simmons.LSU junior Jamaal James and sophomore Richard Jones will compete at the Lied Athletic Center in the 800-meter run.Athletes who already have automatic qualifying marks, like junior sprinter Trindon Holliday and sophomore weight thrower Walter Henning, have no need to compete and will concentrate solely on the NCAA Championships on March 13-14. Shaver thinks there have only been a small handful of Tigers to consistently step up during the big meets, and is looking for some new faces to make their mark.”We need a few more guys to be able to just step it up,” Shaver said.——Contact Rowan Kavner at [email protected]
