BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A debate about whether to allow concealed handguns on Louisiana’s college campuses will be revived when lawmakers return for a regular session in April.
The sponsor of the divisive bill, Rep. Ernest Wooton, scrapped the proposal last year amid strong opposition from higher education officials. But he’s refiled it this year.
Wooton, a Republican from Belle Chasse, is a former sheriff.
Both supporters and opponents of the bill say they are worried about safety.
Supporters say students, professors and college staff should be able to defend themselves on campus, and opponents say the bill could lead to more gun violence at colleges.
The legislative session begins April 27.
