The No. 18 LSU men’s golf team travels to Statesboro, Ga., this weekend for the Schenkel/E-Z Go Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club.”It’s not a long-ball course,” said LSU coach Chuck Winstead. “We’ve worked on that. It won’t be a surprise when we get there.”Joining the Tigers in the 18-team field are Southeastern Conference competitors No. 9 Florida, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 16 South Carolina and No. 21 Ole Miss.”Schenkel’s been around for close to 30 years. The competition will be really strong,” Winstead said. The Tigers are coming off a winning performance at the John Hayt Invitational, where sophomore John Peterson took the individual victory.”We’ve been home now for a few weeks, and guys are getting better,” Winstead said. “It’s time now to go play in a golf tournament and test ourselves and see how that holds up.”Peterson is not the only young athlete on the team. The Tigers will have no upperclassmen in the field.”We’ll start three freshmen and two sophomores,” Winstead said. “I can’t imagine that we won’t be the youngest team in the field.”But Winstead does not see a problem in the lack of experience.”Our guys are talented, and with the right mindset they’ll do just fine,” Winstead said.Winstead doesn’t want to put too much emphasis on the rankings after his team cracked the top 20 nationally and won its last tournament.”We’re talented enough that if we keep getting better the rankings will take care of themselves,” Winstead said. The 54-hole tournament tees off Friday morning and finishes Sunday.CHARITY TOURNAMENTAmateur golfers around the Baton Rouge area can thank LSU sports management master’s student James Dutschke for an opportunity to play this weekend.Dutschke designed the Bridgestone Open on March 21-22 at the LSU Golf Course, where amateur golfers will compete against local professionals to find the best golfer in Baton Rouge, according to a news release.Anyone can play for a fee of $125, and caddies are recommended.
