BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Arts funding takes a substantial hit in Gov. Bobby Jindal’s budget proposal for next year.
Cultural groups say the steep cuts would devastate the arts community around Louisiana. That slice of the governor’s budget proposal is on the agenda for discussion Thursday in the House Appropriations Committee.
The governor’s budget recommends shrinking arts funding from $7.3 million this year to $3.2 million next year.
Jindal proposes cuts to artist fellowships and grants programs as part of a series of reductions across state agencies to balance a budget that has less state income in the new year that begins July 1.
