The news of former LSU wide receiver Demetrius Byrd’s car accident Sunday shocked other Tigers’ prospects preparing for this weekend’s NFL draft.Byrd was in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami on Sunday morning after the accident.Former defensive end Tyson Jackson said he was devastated to hear about his old teammate.”I am heartbroken right now,” Jackson said. “I’ve been trying to get in touch with him and let him know I’m praying for him.” Former defensive end Kirston Pittman said the unexpected accident is evidence that life can change in an instant. “It’s unfortunate that things like that have to happen to great people like Byrd, but God is in control,” Pittman said. “I’m just praying for him and wishing him to pull through. It’s a reminder of how fast things can happen.”Former LSU linebacker Darry Beckwith said he has made repeated attempts to contact Byrd after the accident but has had no luck.”I’ve [text messaged] him, but I know he’s in the hospital right now,” Beckwith said. “His mother called and wanted to tell us he’s going to have a full recovery. You wish it wouldn’t happen at this point in time, but he’s going to make it.”NFL draft analyst Mike Detillier projected Byrd as a fifth-round selection, and he said that shouldn’t change if his injuries are minor.SENIORS DISCUSS DRAFT STATUSJackson said NFL scouts informed him teams will focus more on game video than results from the NFL Scouting Combine or LSU Pro Day in their selections.”I don’t know exactly where I’ll get picked,” Jackson said. “Some teams at the top might make moves that will shake up the experts’ picks. I can perform real well at things like the Combine and Pro Day, but at the end of the day I know everything is based on game film.”Detillier projected Jackson to be a first-round pick and the highest Tiger taken in the draft. Detillier said Beckwith will be a third-round pick despite being plagued with leg and knee injuries during his career. The Baton Rouge native said the Atlanta Falcons have called him in for workouts, and he said the Falcons are the team that has shown the most interest. “I had one of those senior seasons that I wish I could have back and do again,” Beckwith said. “Looking back on previous years when I was healthy, I played well, and I’m healthy now. There’s no science to the draft, so somebody might change their mind right before they pick me. I want to remain humble.”Former LSU defensive tackle Marlon Favorite said several teams have shown interest in drafting him.Favorite said while it is often easy to get caught up in various draft projections, he tries to avoid dwelling on them.”Teams have two days to make decisions, and all it takes is one to fall in love with me,” Favorite said. “The biggest thing that helped me out was my on-the-field attitude and off-the-field character. Everybody I talked to said they liked my personality and they liked the way I play ball … This is an opportunity where you have to let go and let God.”—–Contact Rachel Whittaker at [email protected]
