After launching six homers over the weekend against Georgia, the Tigers hit two Wednesday night en route to an 8-4 victory against Grambling State in Alex Box Stadium.LSU sophomore Ben Alsup got the start on the mound for the Tigers after LSU freshman southpaw Randy Zeigler was injured in pregame warm-ups.Alsup was unhittable on the mound, going four innings and striking out a career-high five batters while giving up no hits and no runs.”Ben Alsup was rushed into the emergency start, and he was magnificent,” said LSU head coach Paul Mainieri in a news release. “He threw the ball great and gave our team a chance to get our offense going. The scoring started when LSU second baseman Ryan Schimpf hit his seventh dinger of the season in the third inning, a two-run blast, to put the Tigers up early, 2-0.LSU added onto its lead in the fourth when freshman right fielder Mikie Mahtook continued his stellar play by hitting an RBI double, and fellow freshman third baseman Tyler Hanover followed with an RBI single to put the Tigers up, 4-0.LSU senior Nolan Cain (2-0) earned the victory for the Tigers after he came in and pitched a scoreless fifth inning.Third baseman Derek Helenihi hit an inside-the-park home run in the sixth to put the Tigers up, 7-4, after Grambling exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth off LSU freshman pitcher Chris Matulis.”It wasn’t the greatest performance we’ve ever had, but I wasn’t disappointed at all with our effort and focus,” Mainieri said. “I thought the kids went out and played really hard tonight.”The game marked the first meeting between the two teams.LSU is now 3-0 against Southwestern Athletic Conference teams this season after defeating Southern (11-5), Mississippi Valley State (10-4) and Grambling. The Tigers will travel to Alabama this weekend for their second-straight road weekend series.—–Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
