The No. 17 LSU men’s golf team turned its fortunes at the SEC championships Sunday, leaping from 10th to fourth on the final day of play.
LSU tied South Carolina in fourth place with an 8-over 872. Georgia ran away with the team title at 15-under 849 — 13 strokes ahead of second-place Arkansas.
Sophomore John Peterson led the way for the Tigers, finishing in third place with a 6-under 210 performance. He is the first LSU golfer to finish in the top 10 at the SEC championships since John Humphries tied for fifth place in 2003.
“John continues to show that he is one of the best collegiate players in the country,” said LSU men’s coach Chuck Winstead in a news release. “His development over the past year is a testament of his willingness to work hard and keep improving. The way he has performed for us this spring is the result of that kind of dedication.”
LSU also had two top-30 performers in sophomores Andrew Loupe and Clayton Rotz. Loupe finished at 4-over 220 to tie for 21st, while Rotz was one shot back at 5-over 221 for a 27th-place tie.
Freshman Sang Yi tied for 39th place with a 9-over 225, and freshman Josh Jones shot a 14-over 230 to tie for 52nd place.
LADY TIGERS DROP TO FIFTH
The No. 8 LSU women’s golf team lost ground at the Southeastern Conference Championships on Sunday, falling two spots to finish fifth at 34-over par 886.
LSU was in third after Saturday behind Auburn and Arkansas. Auburn took home the title with an 18-over 870, while Arkansas finished second at 26-over 878.
The championship is Auburn’s seventh in program history.
“We didn’t make enough putts to stay with Auburn and Arkansas and just some things happened out there on 12, 13 and 14 that just shows you the golfing gods didn’t go our way (Sunday),” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen in a news release. “It happens in golf. We are going to home and work on our short game very hard this week. We’ll wait to see where we will be assigned in the regionals and we will be ready for that challenge.”
Freshman Tessa Teachman was the highest finisher for the Lady Tigers, shooting a 7-over 220 to tie for 13th place.
Sophomore Megan McChrystal was next for LSU with an 8-over 221, tying her for 17th place.
Freshman Jacqueline Hedwall shot a 9-over 222 in three days, sophomore Amalie Valle produced a 12-over 225 and senior Caroline Martens fired a 14-over 227 in the tournament.
