BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The president of the state’s top school board says he opposes a proposed revamp of local school board governance that would limit the boards’ authority on hiring and firing decisions, cut their pay and term limit them.
The opposition by Keith Guice, president of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, puts him at odds with state Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek.
Pastorek contends local board changes are needed to help improve student achievement.
Guice said Tuesday the proposals would put too much authority in the hands of the superintendents without enough opportunity to review the decisions. He says the proposals could end up shielding a “less-than-effective” superintendent.
State Rep. Steve Carter, from Baton Rouge, is proposing the changes in the legislative session that begins April 27.—-Contact The Daily Reveille news staff at [email protected]
