The LSU Alumni Gold track and field meet was aptly titled to say the least. Former Tiger track and field athletes, some of whom competed in the Beijing Olympics, on the Tiger Olympians team dominated the meet at Bernie Moore Track Stadium.Notable Tiger Olympians in Baton Rouge included Richard Thompson, who finished second to Jamaica’s Usain Bolt in the 100-meter dash in Beijing, and Lolo Jones, who nearly captured the women’s 100-meter hurdles title in Beijing. Jones is the defending U.S. Olympic trials champion in the 100-meter hurdles, but elected not to run at the meet.Thompson easily outpaced the field in the men’s 100-meter dash after posting a sizzling 10.15 second time. LSU senior Trindon Holliday finished second to Thompson with a time of 10.19 seconds. Even with world class competition on hand, coach Dennis Shaver was concerned with other things. “The best thing that happened today is that we didn’t get rained on,” Shaver said.LSU and Texas A&M followed the Olympians by each capturing titles in multiple events. LSU sophomore Walter Henning took no time to relish his freshly minted school record in the hammer throw, besting his 235 foot, 5 inch effort in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend with a 235 foot, 11 inch hurl Saturday. “I’m really happy about how I performed,” Henning said. “I threw 235 [feet] three times yesterday, and I think I had one at 229 [feet]. I’m really happy with how the season is going so far.”Holliday shone once again for the No. 6 Tigers, capturing second place in both the men’s 100-meter dash and the 4×100-meter relay. After receiving the stick from sophomore Gabriel Mvumvure, Holliday passed three competitors, coming up just short against Texas A&M junior Gerald Phiri. “We had a bad exchange on the third leg, and once you have a bad exchange, it throws off your whole race,” Holliday said. “I thought I caught him at the end, but the video showed he got it. I was closing pretty good, but then I saw the finish line, and it was coming faster than I thought.”The Tigers recorded a season-best time in the race, despite finishing second to No. 2 Texas A&M. Their time of 39.07 seconds is good for No. 3 in the NCAA this season. The Lady Tigers also sprinted to a season best in the 4×100 with a time of 43.08 seconds.”It was neck-and-neck in a lot of different events,” Shaver said. “One thing I will say about the men’s and women’s 4×100 meter relay is that everytime we’re running it we’re improving.”New LSU qualifiers for the NCAA Mideast Regional include freshmen Anthony Martel and Ryan Roubion in the javelin, senior Adam Wilcox in the shot put, and freshman Robert Simmons in the 400-meter dash. Qualifying for the first time on the women’s side were sophomore Melissa Ogbourne in the triple jump and junior Kristina Davis in the 100-meter dash. The Tigers and Lady Tigers will travel to Philadelphia next weekend for the 114th running of the prestigious Penn Relays. ——Contact Chris Branch at [email protected]
