BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A proposal to hike taxes on cigarettes is up for debate at the Louisiana Capitol.
Rep. Karen Carter Peterson, a New Orleans Democrat, presents her case for adding $1 in taxes on each pack of cigarettes. Taxes would jump by 50 percent on both smokeless tobacco and cigars.
Peterson’s bill will be debated by the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday.
The measure faces opposition from Gov. Bobby Jindal, who has said he opposes any tax increase.
