Less than a week after being moved from second base to the outfield, LSU junior Ryan Schimpf may again be on the move. With junior first baseman Sean Ochinko a game-time decision for this weekend’s series with a hamstring injury, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri said at Thursday’s practice that Schimpf would experiment at first base and could start there this weekend. “We’ve got to prepare,” Mainieri said. “I know I can put Buzzy [Haydel] there and he’d be great on defense and would handle the bat, but if Schimpf can play first base, we can put [Blake] Dean in the outfield, which would open up DH for Ochinko. But we don’t know, because we’ve never seen Schimpf [at first base]. We might see him for 10 minutes and say ‘Forget about it.'”Ochinko has battled a strained hamstring for the past few weeks. The Parkland, Fla., native aggravated the injury against Louisiana-Lafayette reaching for a ground ball at first base.”I wouldn’t say it’s a pull. It’s more like a little strain,” Mainieri said. Mainieri said he would make a final decision on Ochinko’s status prior to Friday’s first game between LSU and Auburn at Alex Box Stadium.
