Former LSU wide receiver Demetrius Byrd is in stable condition in a Miami-area hospital following a car accident Sunday.
The extent of Byrd’s injuries aren’t currently known, but he is recuperating in Jackson Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit. His former coach, Central High School’s Telly Lockett, told ProFootballTalk.com that Byrd “is going to be OK.”
LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette also confirmed Monday that Byrd was in the hospital.
“I’m still waiting to hear from his agent and his family,” Bonnette said. “I can confirm that he was in a car accident and he’s in the hospital. I don’t know his condition.”
Athletes First, the agency representing Byrd in the NFL draft, issued a news release Monday afternoon, saying they are optimistic Byrd will make a full recovery.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Demetrius, and with his mother Sharon and the entire Byrd family,” David Dunn, Byrd’s agent with Athletes First, said in the release.
Byrd is one of several LSU players with hopes of being called in this year’s NFL draft. He caught 37 passes for 513 yards and four touchdowns as a senior for the Tigers.
