The Penn Relays are a competition built around relays, but the individual events took center stage for LSU at the meet Saturday.
Freshman pole vaulter Rachel Laurent was named the Women’s College Athlete of the Meet for Individual Events, and senior long jumper Jeremy Hicks was named the Men’s College Athlete of the Meet for Individual Events after winning their respective events.
Laurent won the pole vault, while Hicks won the long jump.
Sophomore Walter Henning dominated the hammer throw championship at the Penn Relays with a toss of 225 feet, 6 inches. The nearest competitor, Manhattan’s Seid Mujanovic, was 15 feet away at 210 feet, 11 inches.
Similar to the women’s pole vault, this marks LSU’s second straight win the last two seasons at the Penn Relays in the hammer throw. Senior Rabun Fox won in 2008 with a mark of 208 feet, 8 inches.
LSU also won the men and women’s 100-meter dash championships. Junior Samantha Henry finished in 11.22 seconds, and senior Trindon Holliday finished in 10.16 seconds — .23 seconds ahead of second-place Terrell Wilks of Florida (10.39 seconds).
LSU sophomore Gabriel Mvumvure finished fourth in the event at 10.51 seconds.
LSU also finished third in three separate Championship of America finals.
The Tigers finished third in the 4×100-meter relay at 38.89 seconds, while the Lady Tigers were third-place finishers in the 4×200 (1 minute, 32.03 seconds) and 4×400 (3 minutes, 33.96 seconds) meter relays.
