NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Thousands of students are casting votes on whether or not they want to shoulder the cost of keeping intercollegiate sports at the University of New Orleans.
The decision is whether to OK a fee increase of $8 per semester hour to fund athletics because of a proposed $14 million state budget cut in the 2009-10 year.
Tuition at UNO is already set to increase by 5 percent next semester. The athletic fee would be an additional cost for keeping the athletic programs.
Students have until midnight Thursday to vote online. Ten percent of the student body, roughly 1,050 students, must cast ballots in order for the vote to be valid.
