The Department of Residential Life implemented a $250 advanced rent policy for this year’s campus housing contract renewal to prevent housing cancellations and to house more students who are serious about living on campus.
Steve Waller, ResLife director, said students often saved a spot in the East Campus Apartments or the West Campus Apartments but cancel when they find an off-campus option, leaving some students in a housing predicament.
Nearly 900 beds are available on-campus for upperclassmen and about 20% of housing assignments – roughly 200 beds – are cancelled by June 1.
“[The advanced rent policy] makes students really think about whether they want to live on or off campus and gives other students an opportunity to live on campus,” Waller said.
