The No. 8 LSU women’s golf team rebounded from a poor showing Friday to jump from seventh to third place Saturday after the second day of the Southeastern Conference Championships in Blytheville, S.C.
The Lady Tigers shot a second-day 286 as a team, 15 shots fewer than their 301 score Friday. LSU now sits at 19-over par 587, five shots behind leader Arkansas and two shots behind second-place Auburn.
Sophomore Megan McChrystal and freshman Tessa Teachman led the way for the Lady Tigers, shooting 70 and 71 on the day, respectively, to tie for 11th place with a 4-over par 146 after two rounds.
Freshman Jacqueline Hedwall isn’t much further back at 5-over par 147.
“They had the fire in their eyes like we wanted to have and they realized they just needed to step it up and they did what they needed to do to put ourselves back into contention,” said LSU women’s coach Karen Bahnsen in a news release. “They played good, confident aggressive golf. I thought we were flat the first day. I don’t know why.”
LSU finishes the final round of the SEC championships at 8 a.m. Sunday.
TIGERS IN 10TH AFTER TWO DAYS
LSU sophomore golfer John Peterson fired his second 1-under par 71 of the SEC championships Saturday, putting himself tied for eighth place with a 2-under par 142 after two days.
Sophomore Andrew Loupe and freshman Sang Yi are tied for 40th place with two-day scores of 6-over 150. Freshman Josh Jones and sophomore Clayton Rotz also have identical scores after two rounds with a 12-over 156.
The team is in 10th place after Saturday with a 19-over 595. The Tigers did lower their score from Friday, shooting a 294 on Saturday compared to 301 the first day.
Georgia leads the men’s championships at 13-under 563 by a whopping 10 strokes ahead of Arkansas.
The Tigers also begin final-round action Sunday at 8 a.m. in at St. Simons Island, Ga.
