The No. 31 LSU men’s tennis team defeated No. 47 Arkansas, 4-0, on Saturday at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.
The Tigers got off to a good start in doubles after senior Michael Venus and freshman Neal Skupski defeated Arkansas’ Blake Strode and Chris Nott, 8-4. The LSU sophomore duo of Julien Gauthier and Sebastian Carlsson later clinched the doubles point for the Tigers.
LSU won three straight singles matches to clinch the match.
Gauthier defeated Arkansas’ Nikolas Sogaj, 6-1, 6-3, and freshman Mark Bowtell took down Arkansas’ Tyler Tarnasky, 6-3, 6-1, to make the score 3-0.
Skupski gave the Tigers the overall victory, 4-0, when he beat Dmitry Lebedev 7-5, 7-3.
“I’m proud of our group of seniors, they fought hard for them and they fought hard as well,” said LSU men’s coach Jeff Brown. “We are beginning to play our best and have gained great momentum toward the end of the season.”
WOMEN LOSE TO ARKANSASThe No. 22 LSU women’s tennis team suffered a different fate than its male counterpart, falling to No. 14 Arkansas, 4-3, in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.
“It was a very tough loss to a great team,” said LSU women’s coach Tony Minnis. “We need to get the momentum back that we had a couple of weeks ago.”
In doubles action, Arkansas got off to a good start when Ela Kaluder and Aurelija Miseviciute beat LSU’s Nicole Kantor and Staten Spencer, 8-4.The Lady Razorbacks clinched the doubles point on court three when Emily Carbone and Kate Lukomskaya took down Hannah Robinson and Whitney Wolf, 8-5.
In singles play, Arkansas did not have a player for court six, awarding the Tigers an automatic point to tie the match, 1-1.
Arkansas took a 2-1 lead when Kaluder defeated LSU’s Mykala Hedberg 6-1, 6-0.
LSU senior Megan Falcon, the No. 11 player in the nation, lost to No. 2 Miseviciute, 6-2, 6-1 making the score 3-1.
Lukomskaya clinched the overall match for Arkansas after beating Robinson, 6-3, 6-4.
