Sophomore Matt Hill became N.C. State’s third national champion of 2009 with his NCAA victory Friday at the The Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Hill shot 69 in all three rounds en route to N.C. State’s first individual national championship in men’s golf.
Hill finished out a record-setting regular season by winning the NCAA’s ultimate prize. Hill broke an ACC record with his seven individual wins in one season – the previous mark was five – and won seven of the last eight events he entered, including ACCs and NCAA regionals, before making the trip to Toledo.
Hill will next participate in a sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, in early June in hopes of securing a spot in the U.S. Open. He may make several other tournament appearances before his return to State for his junior year.
During a Friday teleconference, Hill announced that he plans on remaining at N.C. State to finish out his college career before he turns pro.
