The Tigers arrived in Tempe, Ariz., on Wednesday to open NCAA postseason play.Thursday, they took their first step to advancing out of Arizona and toward the Women’s College World Series — with junior pitcher Cody Trahan leading the march.LSU’s three runs were just enough to get by Cal State-Fullerton (29-20) in a 3-2 victory. Trahan pitched a complete game and allowed two solo home runs, six total hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. The Tigers (33-16-1) entered the bottom of the sixth inning, knotted at 2-2, and their offense provided the final run to assure Trahan the victory.Freshman first baseman Anissa Young opened the scoring push with a one-out single to right-center field.Freshman Courtney Hollier came on to pinch run for Young and advanced to second base on a single by freshman left fielder Ashley Langoni before being driven home by sophomore designated player Casey Faile on the Tigers’ third consecutive single.Titans sophomore pitcher Ari Cervantes bounced back to retire the next two Tiger batters in her own complete-game performance, but the damage was enough to ensure the LSU win.Freshman shortstop Juliana Santos and Young drove in junior right fielder Rachel Mitchell and sophomore second baseman Ashley Applegate for the Tigers’ other two runs — one in the first and one in the third inning.Trahan allowed both Titan runs in the fourth inning. The Tigers will now face the winner of Friday night’s game between San Diego State (33-18) and No. 10 seed Arizona State (40-16). The losers’ game will begin at 7 p.m.The winner of the double-elimination regional will face the winner of the regional in Norman, Okla., between No. 7-seeded Oklahoma, Tulsa, Arkansas and North Dakota State.—-Contact The Daily Reveille sports staff at [email protected]
