The Louisiana Senate has approved a proposal that would ban smoking in Louisiana bars and gambling facilities.
The state already has a law that prohibits smoking in restaurants, public places, public buildings and most places of employment.
The proposal by Democratic Sen. Rob Marionneaux (MAR’-i-uh-noh) would require bars, casinos, off-track betting facilities and other gambling spots also to become smoke-free. Outside patio areas would be exempt.
The 22-10 vote Thursday sends the bill to the House.
Supporters say the measures would protect workers and patrons from health problems tied to secondhand smoke. Opponents say people can choose whether to work at a bar or casino and patrons can choose whether to frequent them, and they say a ban infringes on personal freedom.—-Contact The Daily Reveille news staff at [email protected]
