KENNER, La. (AP) — Police say a 20-year-old woman accused of dropping her newborn baby girl into Lake Pontchartrain will be booked on first-degree murder charges.
Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway says Ciara Craig of Metairie will be charged with murder based on her statement Tuesday night that the baby’s heart was still beating when she put the infant in the lake that afternoon.
The newborn’s autopsy was being performed Wednesday by the Jefferson Parish coroner’s office, but Caraway said he would not wait for it.
Caraway says Craig told police she didn’t want to have a child and didn’t want her family to be mad at her.
Witnesses reported seeing a woman walk to the lake shore, dump the contents of a bag, then calmly walk back to her car and drive away.—-Contact The Daily Reveille news staff at [email protected]
