Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin was reprimanded by the Southeastern Conference for his comments about Florida football coach Urban Meyer, SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Thursday in a news release.
WVLT-TV in Knoxville, Tenn., reported Wednesday that Kiffin called Meyer a cheater in his attempts to lure five-star running back Trent Richardson from Pensacola, Fla., to Gainesville. Richardson eventually signed with Alabama.
“Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics,” Slive said in a news release. “SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players.”
Kiffin later apologized Thursday for his comments.
