First pitch — 7:16 p.m. A fastball on the outside corner hit foul behind home plate. First base hit — 7:34 p.m. A line drive by sophomore catcher Micah Gibbs that injures the hand of Villanova shortstop Tyler Sciacca.First runs scored — 7:43 p.m. On a two RBI base hit by junior outfielder Jared Mitchell in the first inning.First home run — 9:24 p.m. A three-run home run by junior outfielder Blake Dean in the bottom of the sixth inning. But despite what was a night of firsts in the opening of the new Alex Box Stadium, the only first LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri is concerned with was the first win in LSU’s new park — recorded at 10:32 p.m. in the Tigers’ 12-3 win against Villanova. The game was played in front of 9,054 fans — a home attendance record for LSU.”It was everything I hoped it would be,” Mainieri said. “I was so proud of their kids that they were able to maintain their focus and play the game and I thought they played pretty well.”LSU jumped out of the gates quickly and scored four runs in the opening inning. Mitchell’s base hit combined with a two-run error on a line drive hit by junior first baseman Sean Ochinko that was dropped by Villanova left fielder Matt McFolling.Mitchell was 2-for-4 for the game with three RBI and two stolen bases.”We got rid of the jitters and were breaking the stadium in,” he said. “We wanted to just come out and have fun. And things turned out well for us tonight.” The Tigers added another run in the second inning when Villanova starter Chris Pack balked, allowing Tigers senior third baseman Derek Helenihi to score. Those early runs were all senior pitcher Louis Coleman needed as LSU’s ace threw five scoreless innings and striking out eight batters to earn the win. Coleman said throwing the first pitch of the game was one of the most anxious moments of his career. “The first pitch of the game was the toughest one,” he said. “It was a fastball and I was trying to get ahead with those all night and then put them away with the slider.”LSU added another run in the fifth inning when Mitchell recorded his second hit of the day on a check-swing infield that scored sophomore DJ LeMahieu who recorded a one-out triple. Dean’s line drive home run that cleared the right field fence gave LSU a 9-0 lead.Dean said recording the first home run in the new Alex Box Stadium is something he will always cherish.”Of course, I thought about it,” he said. “It’s something I did in my freshman and sophomore years, so I thought it’d be quite nice if I could do it again in my junior year.” The Wildcats got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning and scored three runs. Third baseman Kevin Wager hit a two-RBI double to spark the scoring. Wager later scored on a passed ball later in the inning.Senior pitchers Nolan Cain and Ryan Byrd combined to pitch the final four innings for the Tigers to preserve the win.
