High school students think being an LSU Tiger is more popular than being a Texas Longhorn, a Georgia Bulldog or part of Alabama’s Crimson Tide.LSU is listed as the 16th most popular university in the country among high school students, according to a U.S. News & World Report released in late January.”We’re pleased that U.S. News has once again recognized LSU on a national level,” Chancellor Michael Martin said in a news release. “From moving into the top tier in the last rankings to now being named one of the country’s most popular colleges, LSU’s reputation continues to rise and reflect the greatness taking place on our campus daily.”LSU was rated, along with other universities, based on its yield, or the percentage of applicants accepted by a university who end up enrolling at that institution in the fall. The figures show the admit yield and overall acceptance rate from the fall 2007 entering class.LSU had a 55 percent yield rate with a 73 percent acceptance rate. If a school has a high yield, or a large proportion of those admitted enrolling, it means the school is most likely very popular with a top reputation, and the students are highly motivated to go there, according to the report.A very low yield means the school could be a “safety” school or a student’s second choice university. Colleges use yield as a key factor in determining how many students they need to admit each year.”This is a great accomplishment for our university,” said Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Astrid Merget in the release. “I applaud the efforts of our recruiting and admissions staff for working to facilitate the enrollment process for high school seniors and for attracting students of high ability and talent who are fervent about LSU. This ranking shows that their hard work and enthusiasm over the past few years is being noticed around the country.”Florida is ranked No. 10 — the only Southeastern Conference school ranked higher than LSU.The University of Texas at Austin fell one spot behind LSU at No. 17. Georgia is ranked No. 20 and Alabama is ranked No. 22.—-Contact Leslie Presnall at [email protected]
