Beginning Friday, the best artwork that LSU students have to offer will be on display in the Union Art Gallery for the annual LSU Juried Student Art Show.Showing 49 artists with 80 pieces, the gallery will display artwork from a broad range of spectrums including paint, photography, graphic design and some metal craft. With over 132 pieces judged, the accepted art goes before a professional jury selected by the Union Art Gallery committee to find the top works and award them first, second, third place or honorable mention. This year’s jurors include Judy Cooper, official photographer for the New Orleans Museum of Art, and Randall Henry, painter and professor of art at Southern University, and will be looking to award the best LSU has to offer. The awards include cash prizes to the top three places and six honorable mentions as well as a gift certificate for $300 to the Co-Op Bookstore as a grand prize.”The annual show has gone on for many years with the purpose to show as many admitted as we can,” Judith Stahl, director of the Union Art Gallery, said. “These works are then judged to look for the best quality in the best mediums.”These top winners will then go on display in the gallery Feb. 13 through March 5, where it will be open and free to the public. The gallery will open Friday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a public reception to recognize participating artists and honor selected award-winning pieces. The band Field Day will also be performing at the reception in the LSU Student Union Art Gallery and food and drinks will be available.”LSU students enjoy seeing what their peers can do in their medium,” said Colin Ash, business sophomore and art gallery worker. “It allows them to keep up with what talent is available at LSU.”——Contact Jake Clapp at [email protected]
