In today’s Internet culture, candidates find the Web to be both a blessing and a curse. However, growing up in the Internet age will prove difficult for future political contenders.
Kirby Goidel, political communications professor, said it’s only a matter of time until a candidate will fall victim to his or her path because of the Internet.
“The Internet creates a permanent record,” he said. “With pictures or video, you can always hope they stay in safe hands. But with the Internet, it’s hard to delete everything.”
Student Government President Stuart Watkins said constant media access can be a problem for future candidates and leaders. He said he holds himself accountable as a student leader and cautiously watches his personal actions.
“Young individuals in general need to watch what they do,” he said. “Individual’s actions can come back to portray them in an unfavorable manor.”
