Tuesday’s Student Government elections resulted in the passage of a referendum that mandates pay for the executive Vice President.
“A few years ago the entire executive staff got paid,” said Greg Upton, the Chief Economic Advisor. “Then the decision went to the students who voted for a constitutional amendment where only the President gets paid.”
But all executive branch members are prohibited from holding outside jobs.
“We won’t want to discriminate against lower income students who don’t run for student government because they cannot not work for a year,” Upton said.
He thinks this decision will encourage lower income students to run for executive branch.
Upton said he was unsure which SG account the money would come from, but the referendum’s passing will not affect students’ fee bills.
The current executive Vice President is Martina Scheuermann.
