The LSU women’s basketball team chalked up its third victory of the season, as the Lady Tigers (3-0) heated up in the second half to defeat Houston (3-1), 72-54.
Four LSU players scored in double figures, but freshman guard Adrienne Webb was the biggest surprise.
The Madison, Ala., native knocked down 7-of-11 shots for 17 points.
“It was good to see a freshman shoot so well,” said LSU coach Van Chancellor. “I wanted her to touch the ball every time.”
Webb nailed 3-of-4 shots from the 3-point line in 19 minutes of play.
“She’s a very good shooter,” said LSU senior guard Allison Hightower. “She got on a hot streak and kept knocking them down.”
The LSU defense held Houston junior guard Brittney Scott to four points. Scott scored 27 points in each of the Lady Cougars’ first two games.
“Their defense might be the best part of their game,” said Houston coach Joe Curl. “Their defense generated a lot of their offense, and there is no question that is a plus for them.”
Chancellor was still not content with the defense of the Lady Tigers.
“We cannot accept what we did defensively today,” Chancellor said. “We’re going to live with what we did on offense.”
LSU junior guard Katherine Graham picked up her first double-double of the season. She shot 50 percent from the field for 10 points and also added 11 rebounds.
LSU was sluggish to start the game. Houston led 12-8 with 11:56 to play in the first half, but a jumper by Graham started a 12-0 run for the Lady Tigers.
“We went into halftime and had a little discussion of the minds,” Chancellor said. “We just had to pick up our defensive intensity.”
LSU only hit 31 percent of its field goals for the first nine minutes of the game, but the Lady Tigers heated up to finish the game shooting 41 percent.
“We should have dominated from the beginning, but we let them stay in the game,” Hightower said.
LSU hosts Nicholls State tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. in the PMAC.
