STUDENT ARRESTED FOR SENDING FOUL TEXT MESSAGES An 18-year-old University student was arrested Oct. 16 at about 3:30 p.m. after he sent harassing text messages to his ex-girlfriend. Officers received a complaint from a female University student who said Charles Heroman, of 4336 South Maiden Dr., sent her inappropriate texts, Rogé said. Officers went to Heroman’s dorm room to confront him about the text messages, where he was arrested for improper telecommunications and advised not to contact the victim again. Heroman was issued a misdemeanor summons and released. INVESTIGATORS BUST MUSHROOM-GROWING OPERATION An ongoing investigation into students using mushrooms on and near campus led LSUPD officers to arrest a University student Oct. 16 at about 1 a.m. Rogé said LSUPD has been receiving calls about students getting sick after using mushrooms and has received similar complaints about students from the Office of the Dean of Students. Members of LSUPD’s Crime Interdiction Unit and officers from the Baton Rouge Police Department received information Oct. 15 about where the mushrooms were being sold, Rogé said. The officers were told a University student was selling the drugs out of his dorm room in Louise Garig Hall. As officers approached the room, they saw Vincent F. Short, 19, of 14428 Sandy Bluff Dr., Port Vincent, leaving the room carrying several cultivation tools, including organic flour, mason jars, fertilizer and a plastic syringe. Officers found six sheets of paper covered in mushroom spores in Short’s room, Rogé said. Short was arrested and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of the manufacture/distribution of Schedule I drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction of justice. He was charged with obstruction of justice because he tried to flush the mushroom spores down a toilet just before the officers arrived, Rogé said. TWO MEN ARRESTED AFTER TRYING TO BREAK INTO FIELDHOUSE Two 22-year-old men unaffiliated with the University were arrested Oct. 12 at about 3 p.m. after they tried to break into the Huey P. Long Fieldhouse using a hammer and pry bar. Officers arrived at the Fieldhouse after the building’s alarm sounded, Rogé said. Officers then found Corey Guy of 7778 Price Ave., and Joseph Slabaugh of 13675 Coursey Blvd., near the racquetball courts. Officers also found a duffle bag containing the hammer and pry bar. When questioned, Guy said they used the tools to try to break through the plywood on the building, Rogé said. Both men were issued a misdemeanor summons and released.
MAN ARRESTED FOR DRUG POSSESSION A 27-year-old man was arrested for drug possession and other charges Oct. 18 at about 1:30 a.m. Officers saw Lawrence Ruggiero Jr., of 5346 Bay Ridge Dr., Baton Rouge, driving that night on South Stadium Drive near Highland Road with his headlights off, Rogé said. When officers stopped Ruggiero, they discovered he had a suspended license and couldn’t provide proof of insurance. While the car was being towed, officers found a plastic bag containing 2.3 grams of marijuana and two Adderall pills, Rogé said. Ruggiero was booked into EBR Parish Prison on charges of possession of Schedule I drugs, possession of Schedule II drugs, driving under suspension, driving a car with no headlights on and driving without proof of insurance.
