WASHINGTON (AP) — A person familiar with President Barack Obama’s schedule says he plans to speak to a gay rights dinner on Saturday, the eve of a march demanding equality for gays and lesbians.
This individual said Obama will deliver remarks to the Human Rights Campaign’s annual dinner. The person disclosed this on condition of anonymity because the White House has not announced the appearance. Obama would be the second sitting president to address the group. Then-President Bill Clinton spoke in 1997.
Obama has faced criticism from activists for not taking a stronger stand on overturning a ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. Thousands are expected for Sunday’s National Equality March, where speakers are expected to be critical of Obama.
