More than a month ago, a wide open area on campus became the site of an unfortunate and potentially tragic crime.
The bridge on south campus drive near the university lakes is where LSU Police say two sorority members were held up at gunpoint and robbed. The crime happened nearly a month ago on September 6, and the university did not notify students in a broadcast email or announcement. The only official log is in this LSU Police report.
Helen hare sot-“Nobody was injured during the whole incident,” said Major Helen Hare, LSU Police Department. “The victims did exactly what they were suppose to do they complied with the suspect’s demands, they got what they wanted and they left.”
Police say the students had their purses stolen while they were walking to their house, but won’t say which house. And while no one else knew the crime happened, Pan-Hellenic council president Kelli Huff says other sorority members did.
“It was reported to Greek Life,” said Huff. “We have people who patrol behind the row at night, every night but they don’t patrol that area.”
LSU Police normally have patrols along sorority row, but after this incident, sorority members want to beef up the number of cops on duty.
“The sorority members feel very passionately about having that person, having that police officer there,” said Angela Guillory, director of Greek Affairs.
Guillory said the police department went up on their hourly rate—and the Pan-Hellenic budget does not have enough money to pay for the added patrols. So that means sorority members have to come up with $40,000, all in the name of safety.
“Anything can happen, we’re not [safe] just because we live in these pretty houses,” said Huff.
“You’ve got to be careful – all of the time,” said Guillory.
The Pan-Hellenic council will vote on the fee increase within the next week. It’s expected to pass.
The extra patrols will cost each sorority member an additional 2 dollars to have cops on duty seven days a week from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.
