NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A move to dismiss the federal bankruptcy case filed by former Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson and his wife has been denied.
Jefferson faces sentencing Nov. 13 on 11 corruption charges.
In filing for liquidation, Jefferson and his wife Andrea listed a monthly income of nearly $31,000. A trustee earlier said the case should be filed under a portion of the law that would make it more difficult for the couple to escape debts.
But the bankruptcy court ruled that the Jeffersons income is likely to fall to a lower level in the future.
In addition to debts of as much as $10 million, including $5.7 million in criminal defense fees, the federal government also is trying to seize $478,000 from Jefferson.
