With two baseball stadiums and only one team, campus faces the decision of what to do with the older stadium. The plans for the future of the old Alex Box are going to be carried out soon.
The old Alex Box stadium is overgrown with weeds and has been abandoned.
Executive director of facility and utility operations Bobby Pitre says demolition has been intended for a while.
“They didn’t want to start the demolition during football season just because it’d be a lot of equipment around the old stadium that would be taking up some prime parking spaces,” said Pitre.
The University is evaluating a long-term plan for what to do with the site after the box is torn down.
Considerations include more parking and apartments.
While the inside of the stadium is no longer in use, some parts of the outside are. These public bathrooms on Nicholson and south stadium drive are still in use during home football games.”
Pitre says the new Alex box stadium was built for the 2009 season.
“There were infrastructure issues with the plumbing, not enough bathrooms, some of the more modern codes for disability and fire marshals weren’t met with the old stadium,” he said.
An auction began October 20 to sell memorabilia from the old box. Items sold include pieces of the nets, signs, seats and dirt.
“I guess it’s a great fundraiser for the people that would want to buy something like that,” said Allie Green, kinesiology senior.
The auction is expected to continue throughout the 2010 baseball season.
Proceeds go towards both the University and the Athletic Department. To participate in the auction, click here.
