The Southeastern Conference announced on Monday that an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty given to Georgia receiver A.J. Green late in Saturday’s game was unjustified.
Officials ruled on the field that Green went overboard celebrating a touchdown and penalized the Bulldogs 15 yards for excessive celebration.
The penalty allowed the Tigers to get the football inside of Georgia territory, setting up LSU’s final scoring drive.
“He was celebrating with his teammates, which is fine,” SEC coordinator of officials Rogers Redding told the Advocate. “The officials were trying to herd them up and get them to the sideline, and what the official reacted to was the player coming out from that group of teammates and making what appeared to be a gesture to the crowd.”
