Tents, folding chairs, ice chests and even left over drinks are just a few items that are known for being picked off unattended tailgates.
As people flock to the stadium come game time, some leave their possessions behind. Locking up your belongings in a building or car will keep you from being a victim of sticky fingers. SLU student Stephen Durel was recently robbed of his folding chair and ice chest.”
“A kid can easily just go and open up an ice chest or take the ice chest with them, or just grab my chair and walk away and no one notices,” said Durel.
Other common stolen items include barbeque grills, tables, game day decorations, and tailgating games.
Thefts like this happen a number of times on game days, so it’s important to keep an eye on your belongings and lock them up if possible. If you see one of these thefts occur, you should contact the police immediately.
“We have probably 10 times the people parking on a normal day, but victims are fans of the game,” said detective Jason Bettemcourtt of the LSU police department. “The typical victim is somebody who actually comes and goes to the game because they’re going to leave their property behind.”
Bettemcourtt said most of these thefts happen during the game when everyone is at the stadium. So every game day, whether at home or away, you should keep tabs on all your things and keep them in a safe place while you’re at the game.
Detective Bettemcourt said the most commonly stolen items are ice chests.
