SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Thousands of dead fish are washing up on the shores of a lagoon in Puerto Rico’s capital.Javier Laureano of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program says the deaths are not related to an explosion at a nearby fuel depot that burned for two days before the fire was put out this weekend.Laureano said Monday that the tilapia, sardines and other fish suffocated because of poor water circulation in San Jose Lagoon. He says the lagoon had another big fish kill about 18 months ago.The fish have been washing ashore near one of San Juan’s most heavily populated areas since Friday.The U.S. Caribbean territory’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources is organizing a cleanup this week.- – – -Contact The Daily Reveille’s news staff at [email protected]
