The National Insurance Crime Bureau estimates that one million vehicles are stolen across the country annually. Thefts are happening in parking lots, at affluent residences and even college campuses.
A thief broke into LSU student, Stephanie Morrison’s BMW recently and stole more than her IPod; the thief took her sense of safety. “I felt violated,” said Morrison. “It just scares me that this happened right outside where I live.”
Morrison’s break in was the exception and not the norm. Statistics from the National Crime Center, a branch of the FBI, show that criminals usually favor older, less expensive vehicles instead of luxury cars.
Whether you have a clunker or an expensive car, Maj. Helen Haire of the LSU Police has some tips to keep in mind before parking. “First and foremost, lock your doors,” said Haire. “Secure valuables and park in a well-lit place.
Haire also suggests that car owners who have anti-theft protection systems like LoJack, OnStar and car alarms use them consistently, and avoid leaving windows partially down on hot days.
