The Prodigy – Invaders Must Die
By ChrisN
Typical of The Prodigy, their songs consist of one or two lines repeated over and over on top of a synthesizer beat being hammered out with varying degrees of tempo and intensity. While literally this is a recipe for low quality music, The Prodigy has repeatedly pulled it off.
Invaders Must Die features sound effects identical to previous albums (“Take Me To The Hospital” sounds very similar to their past hit “Out of Space”). The reggae sample used in “Thunder” is hugely overused in the electronic community, and The Prodigy has not done anything outstanding with it. I recommend avoiding these two tracks as they drag on and do not provide much substance to the album as a whole. I will also add that the album artwork is mediocre and provides nothing to the experience.
Despite several other drawbacks, (including mind numbing repetition), this is an on par album for The Prodigy. The opening track “Invaders Must Die” is original, very fun to listen to, and serves as a great lead-in to the rest of the album. “Omen” is likely the most popular track on this album, receiving outstanding critical attention and wide use in the electronic community. “Omen Reprise” is an uplifting track which adds some depth to the album. “Stand Up” is a fitting conclusion, with Manfred Mann’s sample well mixed.
If you have enjoyed any of the past Prodigy releases (especially their earlier work), you will definitely enjoy and appreciate Invaders Must Die. Most of the tracks lack creativity, but why do you need that when you have made a startling reputation without it?
Overall 6.5 / 10
