College of Engineering Dean Richard Koubek recently requested the University terminate its industrial engineering program in 2012. Koubek, who is an industrial engineer himself, said he and the engineering faculty discussed the move in depth and made the decision strategically. “It’s requested, not approved,” Koubek said. “There’s a process you have to go through.” Koubek said though the college went through budget cuts this summer, resources are always limited. He said the college needed to make a decision that would strengthen the college and move it forward.”We’re trying to move the college forward with the Flagship Agenda,” Koubek said. “And with fixed resources, reorganization like this is something that has to be done.” Current industrial engineering courses will be integrated into the other concentrations in the college, which will retain the faculty while getting rid of the degree option. The program, under Koubek’s proposal, would be eliminated in June 2012. Koubek said counselors are working with industrial engineering students who will not graduate before 2012 about different paths to take in the College of Engineering. – – – – Contact Kyle Bove at [email protected]
